What do you make or sell? I create a variety of small to large woodworking projects from a cutting board all the way up to custom furniture for homes or businesses. Making tables is one of my specialities….coffee tables, side tables and even islands. I also sell Wood Butter which helps keep your wood items fresh and hydrated.

Why Should I Use Wood Butter?

Wood butter is a type of butter that is specifically designed for use on wood. It is made from a variety of natural ingredients, including but not limited to beeswax, coconut oil, and olive oil. Wood butter can be used to protect wood from water damage, UV rays, and scratches. It can also be used to add shine and luster to wood. Wood butter is an excellent choice for those who are looking for a natural way to protect their wood investment.

Would you describe your products? Ingredients, types of fabrics, etc. I primarily work with wood, but love to add in other materials such as steel, leather, cork, epoxy, etc. I am interested in all parts of woodworking from milling the lumber of a tree to design, building and installation of my work and any other facet where I can use my woodworking tools.

Do you do this full-time or as a side hustle? This is a side hustle for me, but I’d love to someday make it my full-time gig. 

Do you have another job? What is it if so? I’m an Associate Director of Technology at a small research firm called Lextant, based here in Columbus. Lextant does many types of research, but our bread and butter is evaluating user interfaces on automobiles. We work with some of the biggest names in the automotive world. 

How did you come up with your business name? It’s a combination of my name and what I do. It also lends itself to a nice naming convention for products. MaugerMakes: Woodbutter, MaugerMakes: Lumber

What got you started doing this? I’ve always been interested in working with my hands and building things for one reason or another. 

What is your creative process like? Get a commission, Think about how to do that one really difficult thing. Fret about it for a few days. Make sure my plan won’t land me in the hospital. Fret a bit more and then just do it when I have the time.

The One Cup Coffee Table

When a friend of mine asked me for any ideas on an interesting gift for her father for fathers day, I started with the usual suspects. Does he cook, I can make a mean cutting board? Interested in Board Games? I eventually showed her Shaun Boyd’s video about his one-cup coffee table, the silliest, yet surprisingly cool coffee table I’ve ever seen. It has drawer space for precisely 2 sugar packets and disassembles inexplicably by way of magnets. It would be perfect for the theatre if one were to need to regularly destroy a piece on set and rebuild in an instant.  As soon as she saw it, she knew it was the gift for him. I was severely overpaid by my dear friend for this. 16 hours of babysitting is worth approximately $1,000 to me so I definitely made out on this one.
